Rusnė
Rusnė - one of the oldest settlements in the Nemunas Delta, founded in the XV century Church Towers cock marks the 1419. This is the only city in Lithuania that is in the island. The modern bridge Atmata not always saves the local population from the spring floods. During the flood 40 thousand hectares of grassland is covered in water. People of Rusnė are kept safe from the floods by mound. Island has a Polders system equipped with 20 water lift stations. At the Dumblė lake the land surface is 1.3 m below sea level. During the summer Rusnė becomes particularly popular place. Tourists are coming not only from Lithuania but also from Germany, Denmark. In 2002, in Rusnė there was established an information center. The old tradition of fishermen revives – there was built and old sailing yawl according to the old drawing. In Rusnė island we can visit the restored church, the old post office, ethnographic K. Banys farmstead, Uostadvaris lighthouse (1876), the first water lifting station (1907). Rusnė - border town – on the other side of Skirvytė there is a region of Kaliningrad, Russian Federation.
Kintai
Kintai - resort village near Kuršių sea. Kintai is surrounded by beautiful pine-forest (600 ha) - Kintai forest. The church was built in 1705 when it was transferred from Ventė to Kintai. Churches baroque altar is decorated with local craftsmen cut boards. Creatively cut wind boards, transit traditionally decorated each house of the fisherman. Their silhouettes ware repeated in tombstone baptism, and in fishing vessel weathercocks. There lived a fishing inspector of English merchant origin, Vilhelmas Bėrbomas, which in 1844 brought the marking of vessels in there weathercocks. Such decorative and unique weathercocks haven’t been seen elsewhere in Europe. In Kintai in 1888, Vydūnas the future Lithuanian philosopher, writer was working as a teacher (1868-1953 y.). In the old schools building there was established Vydūnas Cultural Center. Next to it there was established a museum, art gallery and children’s school of arts. Kintai - Ventė coast has become a likeable place of the artist for their landscape paintings. Near Kintai, at Minija river there is the Lithuanian Venice - Minija (Mingė) village, where people who lives on both sides of the river can only keep in touch by the boats.
Ventė horn
Ventė horn is the most wandered away western point of Šilutė region. In its tip for more than a hundred years (1863) there is a working lighthouse. Vessels and rafts this place was particularly dangerous. Until the excavation of King Wilhelm Canal, which brought together the Nemunas with Klaipėda, a lot of the ships were crashing here. In Ventė horn in 1929, prof. Tadas Ivanauskas founded a bird-ringing station. Here in seven catchers birds that were caught and ringed, subsequently were detected in Iran, Egypt and even in South Africa. In Ventė horns ornithological station operates a museum. In 1999, Ventė hold a short film festival "Networks", in which the famous director Peter Grynavėjus was present.
Ventė horn is wrapped by legends and some real events. In 1360 y. in Ventė the Teutonic Order built a castle, which secured the water way to Nemunas. However, the castle was washed away by the Kuršiu sea waves and tumbled into the water. Even though the Ventė castle is under the water it still remained famous and it is marked on the map.
Švėkšna
Švėkšna - the town, famous for its highest point in its area (75 m) two-towered, red-brick church (1905) and also by the XVIII century park with impressive alley of lime which was set by Counts of Pliateriai, also it is famous for Genovaitė villa, palace, ponds and sculptures. Švėkšna town belonged to Žemaitija, that’s why its urban structure is different from the Klaipėda regions towns. In a center of the town there is a huge marketplace square. Of by the churches bridges through the restored gates we can access the old park, where we can find some very rare trees. In one of the buildings in the park you can find a museum of Švėkšna. In the back of the alley - Genovaitė villa, it was built in 1880, by the count for his wife. Next to the villa – countess beloved dogs sculpture, a sundial and steps, that leads us to the pond. In the great ponds island – there is a sculpture of a hunting goddess Diana. Count House and a park are at the end of the town behind the old cemetery. There is an old water mill, which is now equipped with a hotel and an excellent restaurant. Simonas Stanevičius famous nineteenth century Lithuanian poet, historian is buried in Švėkšna cemetery.
Žemaičių Naumiestis
Žemaičių Naumiestis - the old Žemaitija frontier town with stone based plaza, first mentioned in 1650. 7 roads lead to Žemaičių Naumiestis. From 1750 the town had the privilege of marketing, since 1792, Magdeburg right. In the old wooden church of Saint Archangel Michael which was built in 1790 there are some old paintings and sculpture works. Žemaičių Naumiestis has an operating museum. Martynas Mažvydas the first Lithuanian book writer (1547 y.) was born and grew up near Žemaičių Naumiestis. A stone memorial was built for him. Towns unchanged architecture over the years, attracts Lithuanian film makers.
Degučiai
Degučiai - also a former town of Žemaitija, received a city rights, but haven’t become on. There is a unique wooden church built in 1757 and its one of a kind in a whole Europe. Next to it - the wooden bell tower and a cross-sun made of forged metal, which is characterized as Lithuanian sacral architecture.
Vainutas
Vainutas – is a Žemaitija border town, located on the beautiful valley. Here starts the path of Šyšos river. Antanas Baranauskas famous Lithuanian poet and Lithuanian literary classic from 1853 worked as a writer assistant for two years in Vainutas. The most significant work of his – is a poem "Anykščių šilelis". The poet had written a poem about Vainutas fire. Near Vainutas - Bikavėnai – a village which was mentioned in XIV century Teutonic Order road record.
Katyčiai
Katyčiai – is one of the oldest towns in Šilutė region. Teutonic Order paved one of the first three routes to Žemaitija through Katyčiai. In 1568 people built a church in Katyčiai and next to it developed a large marketplace. The town is located near Šyša river. The present church was built in 1734 near the old cemetery. During the time of the Soviet government the churches tower was demolished and the bells were removed - the church had became a movie theater. In 1991 the church was restored and the towers were rebuilt.
Juknaičiai
Juknaičiai – is a new example of rural architecture. The village was designed by famous architects as a Soviet model of economic center. Vyžiai Lutheran Evangelical Church located near Juknaičiai was recently renovated.
